God's Holy Angels
But to which of
the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I
make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering
spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of
salvation?
Hebrews 1:13-14
In this issue
of The Prophetic Messenger we will show how God
uses His angels.
1. There Are Different Types
Of God's Angels
a) Michael The Archangel
The word archangel
from Cruden's Dictionary means "a chief angel." Michael
the archangel is a leader of the angels of God. We see this in
Revelation 12:7-9 where it says " 7 And there was war
in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon;
and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither
was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon
was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan,
which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth,
and his angels were cast out with him." Also, in Daniel
10:13 it says "But the prince of the kingdom of Persia
withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the
chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the
kings of Persia." We see from these passages of scriptures
that Michael the archangel is a leader of the angels of God.
b) Cherub or Cherubims
Here are two scriptures
which describe cherubims. In II Chronicles 3:10-13 it says "10
And in the most holy house he made two cherubims of image work,
and overlaid them with gold. 11 And the wings of the cherubims
were twenty cubits long: one wing of the one cherub was five
cubits, reaching to the wall of the house: and the other wing
was likewise five cubits, reaching to the wing of the other cherub.
12 And one wing of the other cherub was five cubits, reaching
to the wall of the house: and the other wing was five cubits
also, joining to the wing of the other cherub. 13 The wings of
these cherubims spread themselves forth twenty cubits: and they
stood on their feet, and their faces were inward." Also,
in Ezekiel 10:20-21 it says "20 This is the living creature
that I saw under the God of Israel by the river of Chebar; and
I knew that they were the cherubims.21 Every one had four faces
apiece, and every one four wings; and the likeness of the hands
of a man was under their wings."
These are angels that are two-winged
and sometimes four-winged. They are used to protect the very
important things of God. The first example would be the tree
of life. In Genesis 3:24 it says "So he drove out the
man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims,
and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of
the tree of life."
The second example is the in
the Holy of Holies. In Exodus 25 :18-20 it says "18 And
thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou
make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat. 19 And make one
cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end:
even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two
ends thereof. 20 And the cherubims shall stretch forth their
wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and
their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat
shall the faces of the cherubims be."
c) Seraphims
The seraphims are six-winged
angels. Here are two examples of them praising God in Heaven.
In Isaiah 6:1-3 it says "1 In the year that king Uzziah
died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted
up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims:
each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with
twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one
cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of
hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory." Also,
in Revelation 4:6-8 it says "6 And before the throne
there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst
of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full
of eyes before and behind. 7 And the first beast was like a lion,
and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face
as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. 8 And
the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they
were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying,
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is
to come."
d) The Angel Gabriel
The angel Gabriel,
who had the appearance of a man, interpreted visions for the
prophet Daniel and told of the birth of John the Baptist and
Jesus Christ. Here is the angel Gabriel sent from God to interpret
the vision for the prophet Daniel. In Daniel 8:15-17 it says
"15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen
the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood
before me as the appearance of a man. 16 And I heard a man's
voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel,
make this man to understand the vision. 17 So he came near where
I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face:
but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time
of the end shall be the vision." In the gospel of Luke
we see the angel Gabriel sent from God to tell of the birth of
John and Jesus Christ the son of God. In Luke 1:13-19 it says
"13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias:
for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee
a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have
joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For
he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither
wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost,
even from his mother's womb. 16 And many of the children of Israel
shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17 And he shall go before
him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the
fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of
the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 18 And
Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for
I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the
angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the
presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show
thee these glad tidings." Also, in Luke 1:26-31 it says
"26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent
from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin
espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David;
and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto
her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord
is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw
him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what
manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto
her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth
a son, and shalt call his name JESUS."
e) Angel With No Name
The angel that told
of Samson's birth would not reveal his name to Manoah because
he did not want to bring honour to himself but only to the Lord.
In Judges 13:8-20 it says "8 Then Manoah intreated the
LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou didst
send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the
child that shall be born. 9 And God hearkened to the voice of
Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she
sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10
And the woman made haste, and ran, and showed her husband, and
said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came
unto me the other day. 11 And Manoah arose, and went after his
wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man
that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am. 12 And Manoah
said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the
child, and how shall we do unto him? 13 And the angel of the
LORD said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let
her beware. 14 She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the
vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any
unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe. 15 And
Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, I pray thee, let us detain
thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee. 16 And the
angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I
will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering,
thou must offer it unto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he
was an angel of the LORD. 17 And Manoah said unto the angel of
the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass
we may do thee honour? 18 And the angel of the LORD said unto
him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
19 So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it
upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wondrously; and
Manoah and his wife looked on. 20 For it came to pass, when the
flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel
of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and
his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground."
2. Angels Protect What Is
God's
In the book of Genesis,
after man had sinned and had to be removed from the garden of
Eden, God used His angels to protect the tree of life. In Genesis
3:20-24 it says "20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve;
because she was the mother of all living. 21 Unto Adam also and
to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed
them. 22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as
one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth
his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live
for ever: 23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden
of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24 So He
drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of
Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to
keep the way of the tree of life." In Psalm 34:7 it
says "The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them
that fear him, and delivereth them." This scripture
shows that God uses His angels to protect His people. In Matthew
chapter 26 it shows us that Jesus could have prayed to the Father
for more than twelve legions of angels. In Matthew 26:49-56 it
says "49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail,
master; and kissed him. 50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore
art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took
him. 51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched
out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the
high priest's, and smote off his ear. 52 Then said Jesus unto
him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that
take the sword shall perish with the sword. 53 Thinkest thou
that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give
me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then shall
the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? 55 In that
same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against
a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with
you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. 56 But
all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might
be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled."
3. Angels Deliver God's
People From Evil
In the book of Acts
we see how God's angels delivered the apostle Peter from prison.
In Acts 12:1-17 it says "1 Now about that time Herod
the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3 And
because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take
Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) 4 And when
he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him
to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after
Easter to bring him forth to the people. 5 Peter therefore was
kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church
unto God for him. 6 And when Herod would have brought him forth,
the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound
with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light
shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised
him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from
his hands. 8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind
on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy
garment about thee, and follow me. 9 And he went out, and followed
him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel;
but thought he saw a vision. 10 When they were past the first
and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth
unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they
went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the
angel departed from him. 11 And when Peter was come to himself,
he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his
angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from
all the expectation of the people of the Jews. 12 And when he
had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother
of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together
praying. 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel
came to hearken, named Rhoda. 14 And when she knew Peter's voice,
she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how
Peter stood before the gate. 15 And they said unto her, Thou
art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then
said they, It is his angel. 16 But Peter continued knocking:
and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.
17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace,
declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison.
And he said, Go show these things unto James, and to the brethren.
And he departed, and went into another place." Even
the apostle Peter thought he saw a vision as the angel of God
supernaturally delivered him from prison.
In Daniel chapter 6 we see
another miracle when God's angels delivered Daniel from the lion's
den. In Daniel 6:19-24 it says "19 Then the king arose
very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of
lions. 20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable
voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel,
servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually,
able to deliver thee from the lions? 21 Then said Daniel unto
the king, O king, live for ever. 22 My God hath sent his angel,
and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me:
forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before
thee, O king, have I done no hurt. 23 Then was the king exceeding
glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out
of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner
of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. 24
And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had
accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them,
their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery
of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came
at the bottom of the den."
In Acts chapter 5 the Lord
sent His angel and delivered the apostles from prison and told
them to continue to speak to the people in the temple about "all
the words of this life". In Acts 5:17-25 it says "17
Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him,
(which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,
18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the
common prison. 19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the
prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, 20 Go, stand
and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early
in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they
that were with him, and called the council together, and all
the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison
to have them brought. 22 But when the officers came, and found
them not in the prison, they returned, and told, 23 Saying, The
prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing
without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no
man within.
24 Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and
the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto
this would grow. 25 Then came one and told them, saying, Behold,
the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and
teaching the people." We see not only did God deliver
the apostles, but while the religious leaders were trying to
bring the apostles before the council, the apostles were teaching
in the temple.
4. Angels Will Only Confirm
the Word of God
In Galatians, the apostle Paul tells us if we or an angel preach
another gospel let him be accursed. In Galatians 1:8-10 it says
"8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other
gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let
him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If
any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received,
let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or
do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not
be the servant of Christ." The apostle Paul was saying
that the angels that preach another gospel are fallen angels,
or evil spirits. The angels of God will only confirm the Word
of God.
